Come and hear, all you who fear God, and I will tell what he has done for my soul. Psalm 66:16

Every time we open for an event-registration, I get excited. And this time is no different. The prospect of travelling to a remote location somewhere and joining a bunch of men who have a desire to know more about God and Jesus and life, gets my juices flowing. It is also becoming a standard practice, that I write a blog about what you can expect to experience at one of our retreats. And then I go on to write a message on that subject and still manage to remain a little vague. I must therefore apologise beforehand, as I am about to do the same. Only this time my approach is different. I figured I would simply start with this question: Have you mastered life?

This is not a strange question to ask ourselves, although I don’t believe a lot of people would. And that is quite strange because human beings are created in a way that we long to learn- we can’t help it. It starts early in life where we learn from our parents at home. We study in school to learn and get a basic understanding of the world around us. As men, we are keen to follow certain individuals for inspiration. This could be our bosses and co-workers but more often it is famous people such as sportsmen or politicians, authors and successful entrepreneurs. And that- in itself is not a bad thing. But when it comes to life, where do we go for guidance and direction? Who do we look to as an example on how to master life?

Many people think of Jesus as their saviour, their way into heaven and eternal life. But how often do we look at Jesus as our teacher for life? Initially, the disciples didn’t join Jesus for their salvation. They joined him so that they may learn from him. Jesus was often called “rabbi” which means “teacher” in Jewish. What is essential for us as followers to understand, is that Jesus was and still is on a mission. Yes, he wants to save his people and grant them eternal life. A life where we will finally be the person he made us be but in the meantime- it is training. It is discovering how to listen to his direction for our lives. It is following him as our teacher for life because he is the one person who has mastered life. He has lived life as we try to live ours. He understands our struggles and our pain. He knows how to find joy and he has loved like no other- and still does!

What is key in this process, is that we understand what our salvation offers us. Salvation equals Restoration!

Following the latest guru in whatever field your interests may lie, could result into some great tips and perhaps some techniques you can implement in your daily life, but it won’t help you find more life and certainly not the life God has planned for you. We need to learn how to listen to our rabbi- our teacher, who is committed to our restoration. It is the restoration of those broken places within us that will enable us to make those small steps in our lives that will result into finding more life. And that, in turn, will encourage us to want more of Jesus.

I don’t want to come across as if I have mastered life, I wish that were true! But I know that when you are struggling in life for whatever reason it may be: too busy at work, stress at church, things going on at home, that there is a reason for that. Maybe you feel emotional at times and have no reason why. Or you may be experiencing anger for no apparent reason and have no explanation for why this is happening. These can all be indications that you are not in the best position to listen to what God has to say to you at this moment in your life. And that is precisely what we offer at our boot camps. Four days where you can unplug from the busyness and the distractions around you. At our retreats, you will be able to be yourself and just let the love of God rush over you and discover what he has in store for you as his son.

Registration is now open for our October event in the Netherlands. I would love to see you there! If you would like to know what others have to say about a boot camp, check out the video.

Love, strength & honour,

Michael
