A couple of weeks ago I was reading a book about fasting and although I have had experience with fasting before, what I was reading was new to me, especially the part about the Daniel Fast. I had never heard about it before.
Like I said I have fasted before, you know: bread, no filling, drinking plenty of water and perhaps some broth, but the Daniel fast was different. If you have never heard of it before, then this is what it is in short: It eliminates meat, bread and sweets, just fruit and vegetables. The days of fasting mentioned in the Book of Daniel vary between 10 – 21 days.
I mentioned it to my family and suggested it was an excellent idea to fast for the upcoming boot camps in October and November.
So I decided to go for a 5-days fast. To my surprise, my husband Michael and my daughter Aimy, age 19, decided to join in. After speaking to Jean Michel and Arda, they too decided to take part as well.
Our day looked something like this: the morning started with a fruit-smoothie, for lunch we ate either some fruit again or a cup of plain veggie broth or again just a fruit juice. For the evening we would have the same vegetable broth and that’s it.
To keep ourselves focussed on God, we shut down all electronics such as TV, Internet, news, iPhone etcetera. The extra time we had (and that was quite a bit I can tell you), we would spend that time with God, our father.
During this time, God showed us a few things that were set against the boot camps. Among others it was: the spirit of blindness, spirit of business, forgetfulness and passivity. Receiving clarity on what the enemy is up to is extremely helpful, so we could pray against it. Our enemy hates it when you fast because it will lead to breakthrough for you and others.
However, sometimes prayer alone, is not enough.
Maybe you remember the story from Matthew 17 about the disciples trying to heal a demon-possessed boy but it didn’t work.
At the end of this chapter, it is said: “However, this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting”.
Have you ever noticed the promise, which is attached to fasting in Isaiah 58:6
“This is the kind of fasting I want, Free those who are wrongly imprisoned; lighten the burden of those who work for you. Let the oppressed go free and remove the chains that bind people”.
And verse 8 reads:
“Then your salvation will come like the dawn, and your wound will quickly heal. Your godliness will lead you forward and the glory of the Lord will protect you from behind”.
Fasting unlocks heaven’s door and slams shut the gates of hell. It also releases the anointing, the favour and the blessing of God in the life of a Christian.
And it is all about the right posture as well.
If it doesn’t mean anything to you, it won’t mean anything to God. Because fasting isn’t about you giving up the good things in your life. It is all about receiving the things you really need from your loving father.
When you fast, anoint your head and wash your face so that your fasting will not be noticed by men but by your Father, who is in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.
By the end of the week, we were more “in-sync” with the Holy Spirit and clarity and hearing is so much easier. God spoke to our hearts. To Aimy He said; “I smile over you”
Isn’t that great! Her Heavenly Father enjoys her. And that is exactly what He wants to tell each and every one of us. Never condemning, He is love incarnate.
To me He said: “You did very well and you are my daughter in whom I delight”.
What a great Father we have. He has so much in store for us. He wants to bless us. He wants to affirm us. We are His Bride, His beloved.
And to Michael He said: “” (well, actually I can’t tell you. You will have to wait until Michael wants to share his story, but it is worth the wait.)
When God promises us something He will do it. He is faithful and true.
O how I love this God of ours.
